Catching Baseball Coaching Instruction and Drills Made Easy for Coaches

Catching a Baseball Fundamentals

These Catching Baseball Coaching Drills are designed for parents and coaches to instruct players on properly catching the baseball to:

- Build the muscle memory to support the proper technique

- Improve your catching ability

- Improve the speed of the glove to hand exchange of the baseball

- Expanding your catching area

- Reduce injury risk. Improper technique can lead to the baseball bouncing off the glove and causing injury.

Drill #1


This is the best catching baseball coaching drill for beginners. It will require 3 coaches, one at each station. Divide your players into 3 groups. Each group will start at one of the 3 stations: Please tell the players what will occur at each station.

Station 1: Straight on catching

- Coach throws 3 balls to first in line.

- First throw at or slightly above the players head. Not too hard, these are beginners. Feel free to use a soft baseball to reduce injury risk. Player will catch it (2 hands), grip ball in glove (4-seam) and underhand back to coach.




- Second, throw a ball underhand to the players mid-section. In this case, the player will bend there knees to catch the ball above their waist at chest high with glove fingers pointing up. (grip 4-seam and underhand back to coach).

- Third ball will be underhanded to player directly at them at their knees. Here, the player will catch the ball with glove fingers pointing down. (grip with 4-seam and underhand back to coach).



When a player completes the station, they should run to the back of the line of the next station. Coach here at station 1 will then do the same sequence with the second player in his line.

Station 2: Catching Glove Side

Remind players it is always better to get in front of the ball. However, in this drill we are practicing when you can't get in front of the ball.

- Coach throws 3 balls to first in line.

- First throw at or slightly above the players head to his glove side. Not too hard, these are beginners. Feel free to use a soft baseball to reduce injury risk. Player will catch it (2 hands), grip ball in glove (4-seam) and underhand back to coach.




- Second, throw a ball underhand to the players mid-section glove side. In this case, the player will step and extend the glove arm, fingers pointing horizontal to the ground away from his body. (grip 4-seam and underhand back to coach).



- Third ball will be underhanded to the players glove side at their knees. Here, the player will catch the ball with glove fingers pointing down. (grip with 4-seam and underhand back to coach).



Station 3: Catching Backhand

Remind players it is always better to get in front of the ball. However, in this drill we are practicing when you can't get in front of the ball.

- Coach throws 3 balls to first in line.

- First throw at or slightly above the players head opposite to his glove side. Not too hard, these are beginners. Feel free to use a soft baseball to reduce injury risk. Player will catch it (2 hands), grip ball in glove (4-seam) and underhand back to coach.


- Second, throw a ball underhand to the players mid-section opposite to his glove side. In this case, the player will step and extend the glove arm accross his body, fingers pointing horizontal to the ground away from his body. (grip 4-seam and underhand back to coach).



- Third ball will be underhanded opposite to the players glove side at their knees. Here, the player will catch the ball with reaching accross their body, glove fingers pointing down. (grip with 4-seam and underhand back to coach).






Drill #2



If you have more advanced players, this catching baseball coaching drill will have the same impact, but will additionally work the players reflexes as well.

Same philosophy as above, 3 stations (1 coach running each).

However, the ball should be throw to random spots (1 of the 9 covered in the first drill), coaches discretion. Have fun with these drills and consider making games out of them. The kids love it and are more likely to stay engaged if there's victory at stake.
